DERBY STROKE RESIDENCY
Commissioned to engage with the stroke and rehabilitation centre at Derby Hospital during a 3 month residency. Initially the role was to use photography as a therapy tool, the role of photographer and subject were inverted. This empowered the stroke patients by giving them the camera. A simple reversal of the gaze at their most vulnerable, the project brought to the surface a deeply human-centred approach resulting in touching and honest perceptions of their world. The patients’ photographs of the viewer became the focus of the exhibition. The photographer’s gaze focused on the silent and absent rooms.
